The NTFS file system integrated in NT4, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP64, and Microsoft Windows7/8/10 handles a facility known as hard links (indicated to herein as Hardlinks). Hardlinks offer the capability to keep an unique copy of a file yet have it appear in numerous folders (directories). They can be generated with the POSIX command ln contained in the Microsoft Windows Resource Kit, the fsutil command tool integrated in Microsoft Windows XP or my command line ln.exe tool. So, using regular Windows tools Hardlinks can only be generated at the command prompt, which can be dull, specially when Hardlinks to numerous documents are needed or when one only makes casual use of Hardlinks. Assistance for Junctions in regular Microsoft application offerings is even more restricted than that provided for Hardlinks.
Link Shell Extension (LSE) grants for the making of Hardlinks, Volume Mountpoints, Junctions, and Windows7/8's Symbolic Links, (herein mentioned to collectively as Links) a folder duplicate process that uses Hardlinks or Symbolic Links and a copy action taking care of Symbolic Links, Junctions, and Hardlinks. LSE, as its name indicates is integrated as a Shell extension and is used from Windows Explorer, or similar file and folder managers. The extension permits the user to select one or many folders or files, then using the mouse, complete the making of the needed Links - Hardlinks, Symbolic Links or Junctions or in the case of folders to make Clones residing of Hard and Symbolic Links.
Pros
- Create hard links via the right-click menu.
