ExifTool is a cross-platform Perl library and command line tool that will let you read, write and edit meta information in various file formats. The application is able to support a wide range of metadata formats, including IPTC, XMP, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, AFCP, ID3, EXIF, GPS, JFIF, GeoTIFF, and FlashPix. A wide range of digital cameras are also supported, such as FLIR, FujiFilm, JVC/Victor, Kodak, Nikon, Nintendo, Pentax/Asahi, Phase One, Sanyo, Sigma/Foveon, Canon, Casio, GE, HP, Leaf, Minolta/Konica-Minolta, Olympus/Epson, Panasonic/Leica, Reconyx, Ricoh, Samsung, and Sony.

ExifTool is a powerful flexible and customizable utility which supports a wide range of file formats and lets you save your output in various formats, including XML, JSON, HTML, etc. The program will generate track logs from Geo-tagged images and will let you rename multiple files and organize them in folders by their meta information.

ExifTool is able to extract thumbnails, preview images and JPEG photos from RAW files. By using this tool you will have the possibility to copy metadata between various files, even if they are in different formats. The program recognizes thousands of different tags and lets you add custom user-defined tags to your files.

ExifTool lets you generate a text output file for each photo and creates MIE (metadata-only) files for backup purposes. The original image file will be automatically backed up when writing new meta information. The output files can be easily organized into groups for better management and easier access.

ExifTool can process the files based on any meta information and supports MWG (Metadata Working Group) recommendations.
