ShipPlotter is a lightweight yet useful utility which enables you to view data about any ship located within your VHF range. The application uses the Automatic Identification System to provide information about the ships.
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a system used by ships to broadcast information and communicate their position in real time to each other. The ships will broadcast their position, identity, destination, course and speed, allowing other ships to take account of their actions. The ShipPlotter application will let you view all the large ships in your area on a radar-like map. The program also lets you see various information about each ship, such as ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), dimensions and destination.
ShipPlotter uses your computer's sound card in order to decode the AIS digital signals transmitted by ships. The received data can be displayed in various formats.
