Microsoft Office Document Imaging 2003 (MODI) integrates programmability options to the document scanning and viewing features that Office contained for the first time. Developers can take advantage of a simple object model developed around the Image and Document objects to show and read a scanned document as simply as a paper file, achieve optical character recognition (OCR), search for text within scanned files, copy or export scanned text and pictures, mix multiple pages into an unique compressed file, and sort scanned document pages as easily as reorganizing papers in a folder.

In order to install MODI and the support files needed for MODI programmability, containing the MODI Viewer ActiveX control, select Microsoft Office Document Imaging in the Office Tools group when installing Microsoft Office 2003. The common installation place is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MODI\11.0. Installing MODI adds 2 programs, Microsoft Office Document Scanning and Microsoft Office Document Imaging, to the Microsoft Office Tools menu on the Start.

You can adjust the MODI object model from any development program that is compatible with the Component Object Model (COM) by customizing a reference to the Microsoft Office Document Imaging 11.0 Type Library.
