CRT monitors' pixels are constituted by numerous dots of distinct color. On small resolutions a unique CRT display pixel can reside of more than 9 colored points. If the screen resolution is big, the CRT tube pixel has only 3 colored dots. Also, pixels standing side by side can share the same dots. So, on CRT displays low-contrast transitions are obscure, but high-contrast junctions acquire geometric distortions.
LCD displays have square pixels of fixed size. Every pixel consists of three rectangular (usually vertical) nonintersecting colored zones. So, diagonal lines and text characters, which are automatically smoothed on CRT monitors, become uneven on LCD screens.
Anti-aliasing algorithms help to fix these issues when rendering raster pictures. If "Smooth edges of screen fonts" feature is turned on, Windows analyzes a photo around the particular text and adjusts color of surrounding pixels to get a good visual result.
ClearType technology was designed to enhance visual result of text rendering especially for LCD panels.
