Project Maelstrom is the first torrent based web browser. It retrieves content from peer-to-peer shared torrents while other web browsers ping regular servers and demand them for files. Much like how a torrent program obtains information from other peers' networks instead of a centralized server, BitTorrent, Inc. thinks that it could be the future of how we are surfing the web as well, and also how we obtain information from the websites we love to visit every day.
Maelstrom is a Chromium-based web browser that functions like Chrome. It even handles standard HTTP and HTTPs protocols so even if a website you like isn't ready to use as a torrent file (just yet), you are still able to browse it.
Even though it's a Chromium-based browser, BitTorrent isn't properly handling Chrome extensions and applications from the Chrome Web Store. However, you can still install items from the Web Store and a lot of it should function properly.
The concept behind Maelstrom is simple: if the web relied on BitTorrent peer-to-peer file sharing systems, using web content could become much quicker and more trustworthy than it is today. While the web's server-client architecture functions pretty good, websites can regularly slow down or become unreachable when servers fail or are affected by too many requests at once. In theory, BitTorrent packaged websites would never be unreachable as long as you could obtain the site's content from another user.
