mkgmap is a lightweight yet powerful command line utility which is able to generate maps in the Garmin .img file format from your OpenStreetMap data. The generated maps can be loaded and used on compatible GPS devices.
mkgmap is able to generate maps directly from the main OSM file or from a file saved from JOSM. Multiple OSM files can be simultaneously converted in order to generate a map tile set. The application will also generate an overview map and a .tdb file which can be used to view your maps in QLandkarte or MapSource. Furthermore, the utility will create a gmapsupp.img file which can be transferred directly to SD card.
mkgmap is able to mix several .img files into a single gmapsupp.img file. The application also uses previously generated .img files in order to create an overview map and .tdb file. The program enables you to customize the mapping between the OSM characteristics of the Garmin map.
mkgmap supports transliteration of characters to the ASCII encoding whenever possible. This will enable you to view your maps on less powerful devices. You can also view international maps. You can specify the character set for viewing on capable GPS devices.
The application is not capable of sending the created maps to your GPS device. In order to do this, you will have to use another program, such as qlandkarte gt or sendmap.
