McAfee Stinger removes 6000 popular viruses and fake alert malware on-demand. It is not a substitute for a complete antivirus, but useful in many situations. McAfee Stinger is freeware for home usage and business use and needs admin rights.

McAfee Stinger is unavailable as the actual release installs a malware-like application on every computer a scan is run on. The 'McAfee Validation Trust Protection Service' (mfevtps.exe) is installed to your local computer without a conspicuous notice to the user. It can not be removed from the system and has no entry in Add/Remove Programs or Uninstall a Program. It works as a service as Microsoft Windows boots. The service cannot be stopped using the Microsoft Windows Services tool.

McAfee Stinger finds and deletes common Fake Alert malware and threats recognized in the "List Viruses" section of the Stinger tool. While not a substitute for complete fledged antivirus programs, Stinger is updated many times a week to contain detection for newer Fake Alert variants and frequent viruses. Note that infected and suspicious files will be quarantined to C:QuarantineStinger and a database will be created for the currently scanned computer in that location.
