GNS3 is an open source application (under GPL) that imitates complex networks while being as close as possible to the style real networks perform. All of this without having committed network hardware such as switches and routers.
This application provides an instinctive graphical user interface to create and customize virtual networks, it functions on traditional computer hardware and may be used on numerous operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, and MacOS X.
In order to offer full and correct simulations, GNS3 actually uses the next emulators to function the very same operating systems as in real networks:
- Dynamips, the popular Cisco IOS emulator.
- Qemu, a general open source emulator, it uses Cisco ASA, IPS and PIX.
- VirtualBox, uses server and desktop OS as well as Juniper JunOS.
Who can use it?
GNS3 is a perfect alternative or completing utility to real labs for network engineers, managers and people learning for certifications such as Cisco CCNP, CCNA and CCIE as well as Juniper JNCIS, JNCIA and JNCIE. Open source networking is compatible too!
It can also be used to exercise with features or to examine configurations that need to be set up later on real devices.
This program contains exciting options, for instance connection of your virtual network to real ones or packet catching using Wireshark.
Finally, thanks to the VirtualBox assistance, even system managers and engineers can take advantage of GNS3 to create labs, test network options and study for Redhat (RHCT, RHCE) and Microsoft (MSCA, MSCE) certifications to name a few.
